This week was our annual ‘Trees for Survival’ planting with students from Murrays Bay Primary School.
27 students their teacher Matt, two parents, 8 Rotarians, 8 volunteers and Frankie (Trees for Survival Field Officer) – planted 1,020 plants on the property of Ray & Jude in quick time.
Trees for Survival began as a programme and was introduced to New Zealand by Rotary Past District Governor Noel Holyoake in 1991. East Coast Bays has supported Trees for Survival since its early days.
The aim of the programme is to grow native seedlings to plant on unstable land, to prevent erosion and improve stream flow and water quality, increase native biodiversity and offset carbon emissions. It is also recognised that growing and caring for native trees has significant educational outcomes.
East Coast Bays looks forward to visiting Murrays Bay School later in the year to see the seedlings being propagated and learn how TFS is integrated into classroom learning.
