On Thursday, 8th May 2025, North Shore Rotary, in association with our major sponsor, Tax Management New Zealand, will hold the our charity golf (Ambrose) tournament at Huapai Golf Club.

This is a fun-filled day raising funds for De Paul House, Huntington’s Disease Youth Organisation NZ and East Coast Bays Rotary Charitable Trust.

Some information about our charities:

Huntington’s Youth Disease Organisation:

HDYO-NZ is a charitable organisation set up to provide support for youth up to 35 years old who are impacted by Huntington’s disease (HD) in New Zealand. HD is a genetic neurological disease that causes a mix of movement, behavioural and cognitive disturbances. There are no recent epidemiological studies in New Zealand. However, based on the number of patients seen in the community, it has been estimated to affect about 30 per 100,000 people in Auckland, which is about 6 times more than the global prevalence. The average age of onset is 30-40 years, leading to progressive disability and hastening death within 10-20 years. Because of how it is inherited, a child born to a parent with HD has a 50% chance of developing the disease. This means youth from families impacted by Huntington’s must often juggle supporting loved ones who have developed symptoms of HD whilst deciding whether they want to take a genetic test to find out if they will also develop the condition themselves. Through the organisation’s main roles (support, education and advocacy), their aim is for the youth of New Zealand impacted by HD to feel supported, knowledgeable and empowered through a strong community support network and accessible information.

The HDYO-NZ Youth Camps are held for youth in New Zealand aged 17-35 years old who are impacted by HD (because either themselves, an immediate family member or their partner is at risk of Huntington’s). These youth camps comprise of a mix of fun activities and educational seminars by a range of HD professionals (including genetic counsellors, social workers, neurologists and researchers) and community members. Their inaugural youth camp held in Hanmer Springs in 2024 saw just under 20 youths impacted by Huntington’s come together for 3 days of fun, learning, mutual understanding and connection. The next one is planned to be held in 2026.

De Paul Housing and Families Support Services:

De Paul House, a transitional and social housing provider and family support service, has been operating on the North Shore for over 39 years.

The fundraising donation from the Rotary Golf tournament will go directly to support the operating costs of the Early Childhood Centre and Community Centre.

These two centres are providing free access to learning experiences for the whole whānau including children, parents, older adults and senior citizens. The centres are open to homeless whānau residents in De Paul House accommodation and to isolated, vulnerable, low-income whānau and seniors living in the local community.

The Learning Centre engages and encourages adults to attend classes held each day, all aimed at supporting adults to upskill practical and useful skills to enhance their confidence, employment opportunities, money management, basic computer skills, positive parenting and life skills.

Our golf tournament is one in which the whole North Shore Rotary membership gets involved with, and we look forward to you joining us for some fun, fellowship and fundraising at our 2025 tournament.
