Hosted by North Shore Rotary

This competition was established over 30 years ago by Gordon McGhie. Gordon was the principal at Murrays Bay Intermediate for many years and a member of this club.

Our guest judges for the competition were Philip and Shona Oliver; they have extensive experience with Toastmasters and have been part of the judging panel for this competition for several years.

Our competitors were:

Conrad – Northcross Intermediate – The importance of history
Natalia – Kingsway School – Why people should play sport
Nayul – Carmel College – Why Failure is another word for success
Rafferty – Murrays Bay Intermediate – Pineapple on Pizza!
Dash – Birkdale Intermediate – Society
Dior – Kingsway School – When life throws you lemons, make lemonade

These students, the top 6 from a large group that competed last week, impressed us with their unwavering confidence. They all spoke eloquently, with vigour and passion. The topics they introduced were varied, from the heart, funny, informed and thought-provoking.

The judges deliberated and declared Dash Widdowson-Adam from Birkdale Intermediate, the overall winner with the speech ‘Society’.

It was a truly impressive and passionate speech, a well-deserved win.

Dash was presented with the Winner’s Cup, a $150 gift card, and Birkdale Intermediate the Shield and $200 gift card. Our runners-up were given a $75 gift card.

Congratulations to all the competitors. Their speeches were incredible.

Following this event, we received some lovely feedback from the teachers who attended with the children.

It is always a pleasure to be involved and help in a small way with this event. We really value opportunities for our students to compete in events that don’t always revolve around sports. There are far fewer options available and we really do value Rotary for organising this wonderful competition.

As you can imagine, we are all so proud of Dash. He is very appreciative of the opportunity you, and Rotary have provided him. We have been showing the shield off this morning, sharing the joy with our Principal and teachers. It will be displayed in our main foyer, in a trophy glass display unit.
