Last week was our annual Trees for Survival planting with students from Murrays Bay Primary School.
28 students their teacher Matt Walker, 5 East Coast Bays Rotarians and 5 volunteers planted 520 native plants along a 40m length of waterway on a property in Dairy Flat.
Trees for Survival began as a programme and was introduced to NZ by Rotary Past District Governor Noel Holyoake in 1991. East Coast Bays has supported Trees for Survival from its early days. The aim of the programme is to grow native seedlings to plant on unstable land, prevent erosion and improve stream flow and water quality, increase native biodiversity and offset carbon emissions. It is also recognised that growing and caring for native trees has significant educational outcomes.
